Scripture
Two things I asked of You, do not refuse before I die: Keep deception and lies far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is my portion, that I not be full and deny You and say "Who is the LORD?" or that I not be in want and steal, and profane the name of my God.
Observation
In a world of excess and want, this is the cry of my heart. If I have learned anything in my relationship with God it is that He knows better than I. My flesh demands more and more and more. It is never satisfied.
I have seen both wealth and poverty in my life. When you are poor, it can be easy to feel sorry for yourself and for your joy to be stolen away. You are tempted to steal and look for get rich quick schemes. You think that if you have money all of your problems will go away. A lie from the enemy for sure.
When rich, you stop asking God for things. You just go out and buy what You want. Soon thankfulness disappears altogether and pride begins to dwell deep within.
The writer of this proverb knew the danger of being both rich and poor. So in wisdom he prayers that God give him the portion that God decides is best. Whatever would glorify God the most. Whatever quantity would create a closer relationship with God is what he most desired.
Application
Our house is very old and needs a lot of work and none of our cars have air conditioning. But praise God! That is the portion that He knows will draw my family more closely to Himself. We have one income, not two. But praise God! For in His infinite wisdom He knew that my presence at home would help our family draw closer to Him. The application of this passage for me personally is a reminder to be grateful for both what I have and don't have, for God is my portion forever.
Prayer
Father thank You for this great reminder of Your blessing and favor in my life. I have no need to worry or fear about tomorrow, for You provide all that I need. I trust and submit to Your leadership in all areas of my life. I praise You O LORD, for a husband that works hard to provide for this family. Thank You for his job, a vehicle that takes him to and from work everyday, and encouraging him each day to labor unto You (Eph. 6:7). Father, I pray that my children would also trust in the portion that You provide and this family would have an attitude of gratitude in seasons of plenty and of want.
